-
- I'm questioning the same upgrade notice as well. I too promptly ignored the
- little postcard because I'm a 3.5 stand-alone user. (I've got an old toaster,
- but hardly ever use it) Anyway, the annoucement went right into the circular
- file 'kuz I thought it didn't pertain to us 3.5 users.
-
- Luckily however, I did upgrade to the Intel 4.0 version last month. But I was
- just like you, and others it seems, in so much that I had no clue that the up-
- grade policy was going to be cut-off. Regardless that I now have 4.0, I'm still
- upset about things because it projects an awful image of newtek to its customers.
-
- It make one wonder about the state of affairs at the company.
-
- As a final point, are you serious about the only public announcement about the
- upgrade policy being made in VTU!? Heck, I let my subscription run out months
- ago 'kuz it wasn't offering ME any useful knowledge anymore. Now, why would
- any stand-alone user read VTU if they've got LW Pro, or some such?
-
- This whole thing seems really stupid, and I sympathize with you and hope New
- Tek works things out for ya...

- As most of you already know, the most recent copy of LW-PRO features an
- EDITOR'S MESSAGE including the complaints of John Gross with his own PC
- dealer and something as simple as a tape drive.
-
- "I've found that dealing with PC vendors is like dealing with car repair
- people. It sucks ..." he writes.
-
- I think a lot of people better open their eyes and realize that it
- doesn't have to be this way - you just force it upon yourselves.
- Although the Amiga market has its dealers who don't care much for the
- individual customer, the majority of the companies are based on different
- business principles than the *too-large-for-their-own-good* companies in
- the IBM retail world. Gross' experiences only enforce the idea that PC
- retailers don't care much about individuals - their market is so huge
- that losing you as a customer wouldn't matter at all.
-
- So - Have you forgotten the dealers that spent all their time with you,
- demonstrating, supporting, and getting you involved with the most
- incredible video tools on a personal computer? Although the Amiga
- situation has caused many of the smaller dealers into bankruptcy, there
- are still several major players in the game. Many of these dealers have
- added a multitude of IBM products - including all of NewTek's and
- lightwave-related products - to their catalogs. Amiga dealers operate on
- different principles, as I have already stated. So why are you
- purchasing from a huge company and wasting more money, time, and effort
- to get support when your local (or mail-order) Amiga dealer could supply
- you with the same product.
-
- "Well, IBM dealers have it to me the next day!" some say. What happens
- when you have to send it back and not get a replacement for a couple of
- weeks? Many Amiga companies may not be able to get you the product next
- day, but within two days is usually the standard.
-
- What about price? It is cliche to point out that what you save at an IBM
- warehouse dealer is nothing compared to what you spend getting support
- from it. Don't you remember spending time at your local Amiga dealer
- getting your questions answered, honestly and promptly.
-
- It seems to me that simply because you are operating on a new platform
- shouldn't mean that you should shut off contact with your favorite Amiga
- dealer.

- morphing between objects with skeletons (incl. limitations on movement)

- NT can, but LW can not.
- LW is NOT optimized for use on NT. It is _ported_ to NT (i.e. runs.)
- According to Stuart It does not yet take advantage of SMP which is

-
- There are other performance bottlenecks with multiprocessor boxes

- Hopefully John Gross will include them in the next round of benchmark

- That was one of my bigger grumps about Animation Master. Lightwave has a
- superior rendering engine, and there seems to be no practical way to export
- work done in AM to Lightwave.

- I guess the big question is:
-
- Will LightWave be able to leap free of the sinking juggernaut that is
- NewTek?

- Yes it is, but I forget the name of Scott Thede's new company. The

- -> Does anyone have any thoughts about the Hash, Inc. "Animation
- -> Master"? It's about as expensive as LW, but the feature list is
- -> puzzlingly repetitive ("render" "features" occur over and over) and
- -> it's hard to tell if it's really worth looking into.
- AM's motto at Siggraph was "Just say no to polygons" and that really
- does sum up the program. It uses spline patches exclusively both to
- model and to render, and it's render engine is a ray tracer. If you must
- have extremly smooth organic models you might want to consider it, but
- now that LightWave has metaform and IK, I really don't see anything in
- AM that you couldn't do with polys in LightWave. And LightWave is going
- to render faster, have more overall tools, and a much better interface
- IMHO.
